HydraGlyde® Moisture Matrix is the defining upgrade in this generation of the Air Optix platform. Earlier Air Optix lenses relied primarily on SMARTSHIELD® plasma surface treatment for deposit resistance but did not incorporate an integrated moisture agent. HydraGlyde® adds an amphiphilic molecule — which is simultaneously water-attracting and oil-attracting — directly into the Lotrafilcon B material during the manufacturing process. This amphiphilic character means HydraGlyde® molecules effectively bridge the material-tear film interface: the hydrophilic end integrates with the aqueous tear film while the lipophilic component bonds to the silicone hydrogel polymer. The result is a surface that remains durably wettable throughout the full monthly replacement cycle — not just during the first days of lens wear when external moisture agents are still abundant.
SMARTSHIELD® Technology uses a plasma surface treatment applied to the outer lens surface, creating a smooth, ultra-thin protective layer that reduces the area and energy available for lipid and protein molecules from the tear film to adhere to. Monthly silicone hydrogel lenses are particularly susceptible to lipid deposit accumulation due to the hydrophobic nature of silicone — SMARTSHIELD® effectively shields the underlying silicone material from these deposits, maintaining optical surface quality and comfort-related surface properties throughout the monthly wearing cycle. The combination of HydraGlyde® and SMARTSHIELD® working together provides comprehensive monthly lens surface management — moisture and deposit resistance addressed simultaneously.
